Chipmunk on the red carpet - Liestman Cinema News September Edition 9/23/2024

September 22, 2024

Liestman Families- Last week, I wrote to you about freedoms in recognition of Freedom Week and our collective responsibility to ensure that our children are both physically and mentally safe in our homes, community and schools.

This week, I want you to consider the next layer of this important topic- Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs. Research indicates that a child's healthy development is contingent on the presence of 5 basic needs (see chart below) being fullfilled. It is only when the first 4 levels are met that a child is on the path to self-actualization and on course to reaching goals and realizing their dreams.

In addition to exemplary teaching, supporting the development of these basic needs is a priority for Liestman, since the absence of any one of the needs can negatively impact a child's rate of learning. We are proud that Liestman has earned the state distinction in the area of social-emotional learning (SEL) three years in a row, making us a leader in the field. On-going training in social-emotional learning and growth mindset strategies, trauma-informed and restorative discipline practices helps Liestman create the conditions that support Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs.

I encourage families to learn more about Maslow's Needs, to confer with your child's teacher regarding any concerns that you may have, and to seek out assistance, (we have a full time Counselor, Nurse, and a Communities in School Student Support Manager) if needed. We are here to help!

Next Week: I will discuss Fall Parent/Teacher Student- Led conferences.
